On May 3, google announced that starting on June 11, using their maps API will only be possible when providing credit card details. In parallel, they will
- reduce the amount of free calls to their maps service from 25.000/day to 28.000/month
- increase the price per call/load by 1400%
(check out some "feedback" on the net, e.g. on reddit)
Since currently, XCTrails Mapspotter produces significantly more than those 28.000 loads/month, it currently seems impossible to maintain the site without either adding restrictions or producing significant cost.
Google does provide means to set limits, which supposedly prevent generating cost, but even then they will still require credit card data in order to be able to use the "free" service. At this time, I don't feel inclined to give them access to my credit card under these circumstances.
Should google not revert some of these announcements (as they sometimes did in the past, e.g. 2011 and 2012), then XCTrails Mapspotter will probably stop working on June 11.

The XCTrails map site, geocaching, cross-country-skiing etc. planner will not be affected by this!
